Correcting expected utility for comparisons between alternative outcomes: A unified parameterization of regret and disappointment

چکیده
A unified parameterization of an expected utility model corrected for regret and disappointment effects is presented, constrained to conform to a wellknown choice pattern, the common consequence effect, a special case of the Allais paradox. For choices subject to regret and disappointment effects to be consistent with this choice pattern, the function that corrects the utility of the obtained outcome has to have a positive second derivative for its regret component and a negative second derivative for its disappointment component. These hypothesized functional forms make predictions about the relative effect that small vs. large differences between obtained and alternative outcomes should have on people’s experiences of regret or disappointment.

Different Attentional Patterns for Regret and Disappointment: An Eye-tracking Study
The unfavorable comparison between the obtained and expected outcomes of our choices may elicit disappointment. When the comparison is made with the outcome of alternative actions, emotions like regret can serve as a learning signal. Previous work showed that both anticipated disappointment and regret influence decisions. In addition, experienced regret is associated with higher emotional respo...
متن کاملA Generalized Utility Model of Disappointment and Regret Effects on Post-choice Valuation
In this paper we show that performance information about “forgone” alternatives (i.e., alternative that were considered but not chosen) can have a significant impact on post-choice valuation. Our approach introduces a new and parsimonious way of looking at satisfaction that combines the literature on post-choice valuation with research regarding generalized expected utility theory. While the po...
متن کاملPreliminary draft Transitive Regret
Preferences of a decision-maker over a set of options may arise from regret, i.e., from comparisons with alternatives forgone by the decision maker. This is natural when the decision maker has to choose between two options with random outcomes. Once the uncertainty is resolved he will know what outcome he received, but also what outcome he could have received had he chosen the alternative optio...

متن کاملDisappointment and regret enhance corrugator reactivity in a gambling task
This study investigated how the corrugator and zygomaticus respond to decision outcomes (i.e., gains and losses). We used a gambling task in which participants were presented with obtained followed by non-obtained outcomes. Activity at the corrugator site was sensitive to decision outcomes, such that higher obtained losses (disappointment) and higher non-obtained gains (regret) both heightened ...
